The last station of the Solomon Guggenheim Foundation touring exhibition - after London, Hague, Helsinki, Rome and Cologne - was Paris.

to the motif:

The motif for the exhibition poster was the large-size oil painting "mandolin and guitar", acquired in 1953, by one of the most famous european artist at that time: Pablo Picasso. It will be no chance that the motif of the exhibition poster is a main work by Picasso, sold to an American museum and now shown to the audience in Paris.

The ambiguous, from cubism and surrealism influenced work by Picasso announce the collection from New York which is staying here in Paris. It's a misunderstanding to see in this painting of 1924 and poster motif only a still life or a view on a landscape . Only at first sight the work appears as a cheerful still life with two music instruments and a window view on a blue summery sky. Table and interior remind of a stage, to the blue sky a dark room faces, but the music instruments form the eye sockets of a skull !

In the upper part of the poster is  the horizontal format of the painting coherent to the letters in the lower part.

Compare in addition the reserved poster design for the same exhibition in Cologne 1958, designed by Joseph Fassbender (order no. 18070) !
