The poster features the work Number 27, painted in 1951, enamel on canvas. This poster in Paris is one of the earliest known posters featuring a motif by Jackson Pollock.
Jean Cassou of the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris was responsible on the French side, and Porter McCray of the Museum of Modern Art in New York was his counterpart on the American side. This important exhibition was a symbol of New York‘s ousting of Paris as the world capital of art. The exhibition was shown in eight European cities and in Sao Paulo. The poster exemplifies the skilful use of different typefaces and colours, serving as a well-designed poster for a landmark exhibition.
Participating artists: William Baziotes, James Brooks, Sam Francis, Arshile Gorky, Adolph Gottlieb, Philip Guston, Grace Hartigan, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Theodoros Stamos, Clyfford Still, Bradley Walker Tomlin, Jack Tworkov.
Compare the posters of Pollock in Hamburg (order no. 23128), in Basel (order no. 23783) and the poster of Franz Kline in London 1959 (order no. 23748) !
